Who May Not Be a Candidate?

Responsible weight management is as much about who an approach isn't right for as who it is. A provider evaluates each person individually, and there are several situations in which a given program may not be appropriate. Being open about this is part of doing it properly.

Situations a provider will consider carefully

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Many approaches are not appropriate during this time.
  • Certain existing medical conditions: Which may make a particular approach unsuitable.
  • Potential medication interactions: Current medications that may interact with a proposed approach.
  • A prior intolerance or adverse reaction: To a component of a formulation.
  • A history that makes an option unsuitable: As judged against the specific approach being considered.

Why this protects you

The requirement for a clinical review exists precisely so that approaches aren't made available to people for whom they may carry unnecessary risk. A provider determining that something isn't right for you is a safeguard, not a setback it means the process is doing its job.

This is also a key difference from buying an over-the-counter product, where no one is checking whether it's suitable for you at all.

If an approach isn't right for you

A determination that one approach isn't appropriate doesn't mean nothing can help. Weight is shaped by many factors, and there are often other avenues to discuss with a provider. The honest answer for any individual depends on their specific situation.

Common questions

Should I rule myself out before talking to a provider?

No. These situations are for a provider to weigh, not for a person to self-diagnose. The point of the evaluation is to make that judgment properly.

If I'm told I'm not a candidate, is that final?

It reflects a provider's assessment of your current situation. Circumstances and options can change, which is a conversation to have with a licensed provider.

A licensed provider determines individual eligibility. A brief review is the first step in finding out what may be appropriate for you.
